With the opening sequence declaring ' A firey horse with the speed of light, a clould of dust and a hearty 'Hi-yo Silver, away!' The Lone Ranger.' and the stirring sounds of the WIlliam Tell Overature, kids all over the United States lined up in front of their radios to hear the latest adventures of The Lone Ranger and his sidekick Tonto. First played on a Detroit, Michigan radio station in 1933, the series was later sydicated on the Mutual Broadcasting System and later still at ABC, where the last radio episode was broadcast in 1954. The Lone Ranger showed up in a film serial shown in the 1930s, but the TV series of the 1950s is now considered the defining serial. Clayton Moore starred as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as Tonto. The series ran from 1949 to 1957. The Lone Ranger and Tonto fought injustice and made the old TV west safe for upright citizens.
