The Old West was filled with successful entrepeneurs
engaged in a wide range of activities - including prostitution (which was
generally called 'vagrancy' by police at the time). One of the most
successful and well known madams in old Texas was Fannie Porter, who operated
in San Antonio. Fannie was born in England, but arrived in the US when
she was a baby. She opened her bordello at what is now Durango and San
Saba Streets in 1883 and she advertised her 'boarding house' widely in a
number of city directories until 1902. Opulent furnishings and decor
were her signature and she hosted the wealthy and well known of Texas, including
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and the Wild Bunch. When moral reform
started to rage in San Antonio around 1901, Fannie closed her house and disappeared
from history. Some say she retired a wealthy woman, some that she married
a wealthy man. #H260 Dress has long sleeves with puffed tops, scooped neckline and skirt drape. Coordinating handbag and choker. Available in Junior, Miss and Womens sizes 3-24 Available in Red, Black or Royal Blue Cotton/Polyester fabric $100.00 |
