Hans Christian Andersens story of the Little Mermaid (Der lille havfrue) who wanted with all her heart to be human was first published in 1837 and has been presented many times in many forms - books, on stage and in film.

The Litle Mermaid listens for years to her sisters stories of the world above and longs to see it for herself.  When she turns 15, she is permitted to go to the surface, as all mermaids are when they reach that age.  While she is observing, she sees a handsome prince aboard a ship that is foundering and she saves him from drowning and falls in love with him.  She waits near the shore and watches over him until he is seen by a passing girl and then returns to the ocean where she pines for him.

Finally, she can bear it no longer and she visits the Sea Witch and trades her beautiful voice for the chance to have legs and walk on land with the humans in the hopes that she will see the prince again.  The witch tells her that she will have legs and will be able to dance beautifully, but the act of dancing will cause her great physical pain. If she can make the prince fall in love with her and receive loves first kiss from him, she will become human and will obtain a soul, but if not, she will die and turn into sea foam, as is the fate of all mermaids who perish.

The Little Mermaid meets the prince and he is delighted with her and loves to watch her dance, which she does for him, even thought she is in terrible pain when she dances.  The prince, however, is told that he must marry the princess from the neighboring kingdom.  He tells her that he will refuse because he can only love the girl who rescued hom from the sea, and he believes that this is the girl on the shore.  When he meets the princess, he discovers that she is the girl on the shore and he is delighted to marry her.  The Little Mermaid is heartbroken and she knows that she must die.  Her sisters, however, have traded their long hair to the Sea Witch for a knife.  If  the Little Mermaid kills the prince and sprinkles his blood on her feet, she will transform back into a mermaid and resume her life in the ocean.  She cannot do so, however, and throws herself into the ocean to become sea foam, but she is instead transformed into a spirit meant to perform good deeds to obtain her own soul.
