The reign of Edward VII of England was one of great
prosperity for the Empire of Great Britain. Though known for flaunting
his mother's (Queen Victoria) authority and prudish values in his youth,
once he was crowned in 1901 at the mature age of 60, he restored much of
the crown's pomp and circumstance, which had dimmed with Victoria's increasing
age. For Britain, it was a time of change and political maneuvering,
a time of the continuation of strict public morals, but, as the novels of
Henry James illustrate, it was also a time of private dalliance.
